Tom Abram, Director of Atkins Management Consultancy addressed delegates from Central and Local Government at the t-Government conference entitled "Defining the future challenges: Technology as an Enabler?"
Based on Atkins experience across multiple programmes in Transformational Government and Tom's role as Chairman of the influential Government Group of Intellect, he spoke on the issue of "Lesson learned" from the first 10 years of Modernising Government, eGovernment and now Transformational Government. The theme of the talk was to put the record straight on what has been achieved, debunking the myths that this is all about IT and that IT projects are inevitably bad news, but identifying what had been learned about how to deliver complex programmes of change enabled by IT. Tom focused on the key issue of effective customer / supplier relationships and looked forward to some of the future challenges of programmes that will focus much more on cross-cutting work, information sharing and shared services. The toughest programmes are yet to come but we have learned much from the last 10 years that will enable suppliers and government working together to harvest a new level of benefits from t-Government.
